Memorial Service for Lord Jenkins of Hillhead

A Memorial Service will be held in the University Church of St Mary the Virgin on Saturday, 1 March 2003 at 2.30 p.m. As the congregation is expected to be large, there will be a video link from the Church to the Convocation House, where those present will be able to join in the Service.

The Vice-Chancellor invites former Vice-Chancellors whose term of office was during Lord Jenkins's Chancellorship, Heads of House, Pro-Vice-Chancellors, members of Council and the current OUSU representatives at Council, the High Steward, the Registrar, the Proctors, and the Assessor, to meet him in the Divinity School at 2.10 p.m. From there they will go in procession to the Church. Any of the above proposing to accept the Vice-Chancellor's invitation to join the procession and to be present at the Service are requested to inform his secretary (e-mail: at the University Offices, Wellington Square, not later than Friday 21 February.

Admission both to the Church and to the Convocation House will be by ticket only. Members of the University wishing to attend should send a stamped (or `via messenger') addressed envelope to the Vice-Chancellor's Office, University of Oxford, Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JD. Those attending are asked to be in their seats by 2.15 p.m.

Black gowns (no hoods) will be worn by members of the University. Those taking part in the procession should also wear black caps and subfusc.

Members of the University may wish to note that the London Memorial Service for Lord Jenkins will be held in Westminster Abbey on Thursday, 27 March at 12 noon. Those wishing to attend are asked to apply in writing, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope, to the Assistant Receiver General (Protocol), Room 27, the Chapter Office, 20 Dean's Yard, Westminster Abbey, London SW1P 3PA.
